Impact Investment and Capacity Building in Support of Sustainable Waste Management to Reduce Emissions of Unintentional POPs (UPOPs) and Mercury in West Africa

Project Summary

The overall objective of the project is to scale up investments in SMEs operating municipal solid waste (MSW) and healthcare waste (HCW) and strengthen national, institutional, technical and legal infrastructure and capacity for POPs phase out, mercury reduction and sustainable waste management in the Low Development Countries of WAEMU. The project is structured around four components: (i) establishment of a regional capacity to support and share experiences in the waste sector in the partner countries; (ii) development of national and local capacities for the promotion of best available techniques and best environmental practices in waste management for reducing emissions of UPOPs and mercury; (iii) organizational, technical and financial support to micro-enterprises operating in the waste sector, (iv) support for the construction of infrastructure of treatment and recycling of solid waste.
